Lead Shot From Hunting and Fishing Kills Wildlife - Yahoo! News

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lead

Lead - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The senior editor of this journal has been aware of the dangers of lead poisoning and environmental contamination for many years. In the '90's he did some "breakthrough" research in the research and development of "bullet-stopping" polymer compounds. A European manufacturer of shooting ranges approached the company he was working for at the time. Europe was having some serious issues in dealing with the lead dust and particles created by shooting ranges. The compound he developed for them at the time was designed not only to survive multiple projectile entries (from a 9 mm!, no less) and to catch the lead dust and particulates as well. He developed a pilot batch for the company to test and formed them into "ingot" shaped masses for test firing. The European company sent back tested samples with the projectiles and lead dust and other particulates still lodged in the mass of the compound. The 9 mm ammo had been fired point blank into the mass without escaping. The compound did not crack, shatter or otherwise break. The tests appeared to be a complete success.
